York spoke with the Director of Business Development for Roseville, Steven Davis, about how they resolved their recruitment issues through the pandemic.
Who are Roseville?
Roseville is a group of 5 care homes over the UK, with over 250 staff, that also include Able Care which is care for the community. Roseville offers care for dementia, short-term/respite, physical disability, sensory impairment, and residential.
Lets talk about it
It’s no surprise that a big challenge through the pandemic was staff burnout, whether staff wanted to leave the sector, retire, or return to university, it was a huge challenge for their care homes. And although they were never understaffed, it was hard on the staff that stayed, as they were doing a lot of overtime to fill in for the others they lost.
Steven talks about how he changed his ways of recruiting, and his experience of recruiting in the past, and being in the sector for over 20 years made him discover some new fresh ideas on how to get more people through the door, and they worked. Normally, If you create an advert and leave it, you will get a few responses but having that constant communication didn’t exist, so they would either find another job or leave. They found that when making an advert, it’s important to focus on the layout and structure, but more importantly when somebody applied, you need to be on the phone with them on the same day to book an interview. Making sure to keep that communication is a very important part of recruiting new candidates, and making them feel wanted in the job role. Without stable communication, you are competing with other companies with better strategies and better responses. Care is a tough role, long hours, weekend shifts. And for some candidates, having your own choices and being able to talk about how you want to work makes a huge difference when recruiting and finding someone to fit the job role.
